The Pergola

We are now in full swing of spring & summer patio party season. That means it’s time to make sure your backyard oasis is shipshape for all the warm weather entertaining in store.  There are so many beautiful ways to transform your backyard. One of our favorites is the addition of a pergola.

The pergola is a free-standing structure, sometimes synonymous with an arbor or gazebo. other times a pergola is designed to serve more as a cabana type of structure. They are typically independently standing, but may sometimes be an extension of a home or building or serve as protection for an open terrace.

The style of your pergola depends on a number of factors. Will you be using it as a deck or deck extension, or to add functionality to a poolside, garden, or to backyard patio entertaining? Do you want it to provide shelter from the sun, or do you prefer loose rafters that allow trailing vines and the sun to dart through? As far as materials go, do you like a traditional wooden design, or do you prefer something more creative, possibly incorporating stone masonry, scrolled metal flourishes, or sweeping canvas curtains?

It’s funny, but as we talk about lovely pergolas and all their variations, you can almost feel the breeze blowing gently through the beams, wicking away the heat of the day while you refresh yourself in the shade of your new retreat.
